My Kyle
It's hard to believe my little 1st grader is almost a 2nd grader! But he has grown so much and it's fun to see where his learning is going. I've also really enjoyed watching him grow socially. He has a good group of boys that he plays with and they are similar in their likes. Growing up with a sister, much of what Kyle plays is lost on me, but I'm so thankful that he puts himself out there and can transform into any character his group of friends decide.
Last year, Kyle was tested for SAGE (the gifted program) in our district. Unfortunately or fortunately, he didn't qualify and we were fine with the results. Then his teacher this year, begged and pleaded for us to sign off on the appeal process and after much discussion, we decided we would attempt the testing again, but this would be the last time. Because of who his friends are, I was really turning to God quite a bit throughout the process because they are all in the program. Well, needless to say, Kyle qualified and has been attending for 7 weeks. He loves it and he loves going with all 5 of his friends!
As a teacher, I was skeptical of the program, but I am HIGHLY impressed as a parent. I've never been worried about Kyle academically, it's the social aspect I've been more concerned with. Part of the curriculum is working with gifted children to help them successfully communicate with all kids, regardless of their IQ. I have seen a huge change in Kyle and his ability to communicate. I think Kyle is sometimes seen as a "know-it-all", coupled with being sensitive, and being misinterpreted, but with the communication skills he's learning in SAGE, he's able to work through some of those feelings and our evenings are going much better. Sometimes it's hard being the only boy and surrounded by girls who don't understand his intentions.
And the overall BONUS of SAGE-in the high school SAGE classes-they will help him find a college based on our family needs/wants and help him apply for scholarships! Maybe one child will have their college completely paid for?!?! One can hope........
In the meantime, I'm proud of you Buddy! Keep up the good work!
Spring Break 2015
The words, "spring" and "break" was definitely a welcomed BREAK at our house this year! This family has been sick since Thanksgiving. We even had to cancel or Anniversary plans because John, Natalie and I were sick. Anyway, it was necessary to get away from the germs and use the time to catch up on sleep, but more importantly, catch up with being together as a family.
We stayed up late, we slept in and we even had slumber parties downstairs. We ventured out with our MOMs group, hung out with my sis and Gracie Louise, stayed in jammies on the dreary days, and watched a few movies.
On Monday, we went with my MOMs group to the Police Station (Bumblebee) and the kids had a blast! Now, at the age of 7, Kyle wants to be a police officer when he grows up and the police officers knew this and took some extra time with Kyle. Hey, he wanted to be a Boxer-this is a huge step! Because I couldn't bring in a stroller, I went light with my items and forgot my camera. But they took us all over the station, including the jail! Yes, that was enough for me to always be a good, law-abiding, citizen.
After the police station, we met up with Aunt Nerned and Gracie and wanted to attempt the Zoo. Well, so did 1,000 other Kansas Citians, so we headed to a new park, Shawnee Mission Park in Kansas. The kids had fun, but I think next time we will stay a little closer to home. As we were heading home, we just HAD to stop by Yogurtini. The kids will never turn down Yogurtini!! Oh yeah, and we can't forget how much DIRT all four kids had on them at the end of the day. The girls with the long hair had sand in their hair, but hey, they had fun and that's what matters! I like to think it will build their immune system and will pay off later!
On Tuesday, we had to wake up early and head to church for Kia's Parent/Teacher conference. Why on earth did my sister sign me up for an 8:45 conference is beyond me! OH well, the conference went well and we are super proud of our Kia. My sister then brought Gracie over so I could watch her while she went to her conference and then to the doctor. We just hung out, ate lunch and then took naps that afternoon.
On Wednesday, we woke up to a very dreary day. The kids played all day and the cleaning was put on hold for Thursday. It was such a fun day to hang out on the couch while the kids played around me.
On Thursday, we had another dreary day, but I had a dentist appointment, so the kids went over to Aunt Nerned's while I snuck away to get my teeth cleaned. Again the cleaning, was pushed to another day! However, I did take all 3 kids grocery shopping. I think Natalie liked the company. It's normally just the two of us on preschool days getting all the errands and grocery shopping done.
On Friday, Daddy decided to see a doctor because he just wasn't feeling better. So, we stayed in and enjoyed having Daddy home early for once. Daddy decided we needed to order pizza, so we ordered pizza and watched a movie at home that night.
As usual, our weekend was packed, and the cleaning never did get finished, but the kids definitely had a great end to our spring break. Kyle and Daddy went to KU with his baseball team. They got to go on the field for the National Anthem and then watch KU play some baseball-they won! While Daddy took Kyle to Lawrence, I took Kia to a birthday party at church. It was a super fun birthday party and definitely up Kia's alley.
As you can see, we had a great week together! My dad always said to never wish your life away, so I really try not to, but I do love my summers with my kids. I'm VERY excited for THIS summer with the kids and yes, I have the countdown started.
Daddy hasn't sent me his pictures for the KU game, so I will post them when he does, but here are a few of our pictures for the week.
